Schoolgirl killed, parents injured over land dispute
A schoolgirl was stabbed to death while her parents and aunt injured badly as they were attacked over land dispute in Lalmonirhat Sadar upazila yesterday.
The incident took place in the morning at Shiberkuti village of Kulaghat union.
Lucky Khatun, 14, a ninth-grader at Char Kulaghat High School, died on the spot after she was stabbed several times while trying to save her father Nazrul Islam from his attackers, said Mahfuz Alam, OC of Lalmonirhat Sadar Police Station.
Ekramul Haque Ekra -- husband of Kulaghat Union Parishad’s reserved woman member Dulali Begum -- led a group of 18 to 20 armed assailants in a bid to forcibly occupy 30 decimals of disputed land.
Nazrul, 44, his wife Kusum Begum, 38, and her sister Shama Banu, 41, were beaten mercilessly as they resisted the attackers. Police recovered the young girl’s body and sent it to Sadar hospital morgue for autopsy.
Police also arrested five persons including Ekramul from the spot, the OC said, adding that the injured were admitted to Lalmonirhat Sadar Hospital.
Villager Nazir Ali, 75, said a case over the land’s ownership is under trial with the court, but “Nazrul Islam is the lawful owner of the land and he has been enjoying it for the last 30 years.”
A process to file a murder case in this connection was underway, the OC said.
