Schoolboy killed as trawlers collide
A schoolboy drowned when three trawlers collided in the Kumar river at Bhanga bazar in Bhanga upazila under the district on Monday.
The deceased was Sohan Khan, 14, son of Nur Alam Khan of Jiakuli village under Nagarkanda upazila.
He was a Class VIII student at Bhanga Pilot High School.
Five boys fell into the river when three trawlers collided around 6:00pm, locals said.
Four of the boys managed to return to the bank of the river, but Sohan went missing.
On information, fire service men rushed to the spot and recovered Sohan's body from the river with the help of locals around 8:30pm, said Sojibur Rahman, unit chief of Bhanga Fire Station.
"A boat race is organised in the Kumar river every year on the occasion of Vishwakarma Puja. Hundreds of people from different areas come to enjoy the race.
"Though the race was not organised this year, many people came to the area, thinking that it would be held as ususal. The three trawlers were carrying people including those coming to see the festive occasion," he added.
