Rohingya woman lands in jail
A court in Cox’s Bazar yesterday sentenced a Rohingya woman to five years’ rigorous imprisonment in a narcotic case, while in Chandpur’s Hajiganj, a top drug peddler surrendered to police.
The Rohingya woman, Fatema Khatun, 47, is a resident of Kutupalang refugee camp in Cox’s Bazar and wife of Ruhul Amin from Panirchhara village in Myanmar’s Akyab (now Sittwe).
The court also fined Fatema Tk 5,000 and she would have to serve an additional five months in jail if she fails to pay the fine, reports our correspondent from Cox’s Bazar.
According to the case statement, a team of Rapid Action Battalion arrested Fatema in Amgachhtoli area of the refugee camp with 9,790 pieces of contraband yaba pills on October 28, 2017.
Meanwhile, top drug peddler Kazi Dulal, 50, accused in 15 narcotic cases, surrendered to police at the office of Jihadul Kabir, superintendent of police (SP) in Chandpur, a correspondent from Chandpur reports.
Kazi Dulal, from Toragar area of Hajiganj, had been involved in illegal trade of Phensedyl and yaba since 1996, the SP said, adding that the drug peddler had served different terms in jail and warrants were issued against him in several other cases.
Dulal established his illicit drug network under patronage of influential political leaders in Hajiganj and police did not arrest him due to the influence, alleged locals requesting not to be named.
