A suspected robber was killed in a “gunfight” with members of the Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) in Banshkhali upazila of Chattogram early today.
Deceased Morshed Alam (35) was accused in around two dozen cases, including murder, our Chattogram correspondent reports, quoting Mahmudul Hasan, assistant director (media wing) of Rab-7.
A patrol team of Rab-7 launched a drive at Banigram Lotmuni hilly area around 12:30am after receiving information that a gang of robbers was prepping to commit robbery in the area, the Rab official said.
Sensing the presence of law enforcers, the robbers opened fire on the elite force members, forcing them to retaliate, he added.
At one stage, Morshed was shot while his cohorts managed to flee the scene, he said.
He was taken to Banshkhali Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared him dead.
The elite forcer members recovered five firearms, 14 bullets and three cartridges from the spot, added Mahmudul Hasan.
