Road blocked, arrest of culprit demanded
Students, their guardians and villagers blocked Dinajpur-Rangpur Highway in Chirirbandar upazila for an hour on Saturday, demanding arrest of a high school teacher for sexually harassing a Class IX girl student of the school in the upazila on Thursday.
A large number of vehicles got stranded on both sides of the highway due to the blockade.
Police said students of Alokdihi JB High School in the upazila and their guardians gathered on the highway at around 10:00am yesterday, carrying banners and placards. Later, they blocked the highway for an hour, demanding arrest of Mukul Chandra Das, a teacher of the school, for sexually harassing a girl student on Thursday.
Afterward, residents of the area also joined the agitation.
The agitating students withdrew the blockade at around 11:00am after Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Golam Rabbani assured them that the accused teacher will be arrested.
According to family members of the victim, Mukul called the girl to his room while he was examining the answer sheet of the girl on Thursday morning.
The teacher allegedly sexually harassed her after locking the door.
After the incident, the girl submitted a written complaint to the UNO on Thursday.
The school authority suspended the accused teacher on Friday following an order of the UNO, said Nanda Kumar, the headmaster of the school.
