Revoke decision to install mobile tower near Lawachhara
Lawachhara Jibo Boichitro Rokkha Andolon formed a human chain and organized a rally in Srimangal upazila town of Moulvibazar yesterday protesting the Teletalk’s move to install a mobile phone tower within half a kilometre from Lawachara National Park.
“It will cause immense harm to the environment and ecology if a mobile tower is installed beside Lawachhara Udyan,” Dipen Bhattacharjee, Srimangal unit vice president of Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB), said at the programme.
“It seems the forest department is least bothered to save the nature of Lawachhara. We will continue protest unless the plan to mobile tower established is revoked,” said Joly Paul, convener of Lawachhara Jibo Boichitro Rokkha Andolon, who presided over the programme.
The government should not embark on projects that may destroy the environment, said Provasini Sinha, Srimangal unit president of Mohila Parishad.
Installation of mobile towers around Lawachhara National Forest, a tropical rain forest covering 1250 hectares of land, will lead to its virtual destruction, speakers at the programme said.
Adverse situation is already forcing the wild animals to move to villages adjoining the forest area, they said.
Joint conveners of Lawachhara Jibo Boichitro Rokkha Andolon Kazi Shamsul Haque and Taposh Das, Moulvibazar district coordinator of Bangladesh Poribesh Bachao Andolon ASM Saleh Sohel, Sujan’s Moulvibazar district Secretary Jawahar Lal Datta, Lawachhara punjee headman Phila Pathomy, district Jubo Union General Secretary Jahangir Joyce, poet Jahirul Mithu, dramatist Faisal Ahmed, rights activist SK Suman Das and writer Javed Bhuiyan, among others, were present at the programme.
