Reception at the expense of education!
Teachers and students of Jadurani Girls' High School in Haripur upazila yesterday went to Amgaon union unit Awami League (AL) office with a procession to greet a newly elected vice-chairman, suspending their classes.
Locals and witnesses said a procession led by the school Headmaster Sultan Mahmud paraded the village roads amid scorching heat before reaching the union AL office at noon.
They later greeted newly elected Haripur Upazila Parishad Vice-Chairman Abdul Quaiyum Pushpo with bouquets of flowers.
An assistant teacher of the school, seeking anonymity, said about five hundred students and their teachers joined the procession.
“The school authority all of a sudden suspended our classes yesterday and asked us to join the procession,” Class VII student Sumaia Akhter said.
Haripur Upazila Secondary Education Officer (USEO) SR Farukh said it cannot be a right thing to hold such a programme, hampering children's classes.
One cannot hold such a programme during school hours, Haripur Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) MJ Arif Beg said.
He will ask the USEO to investigate the matter and take necessary steps in this regard, the UNO added.
