Rally to stop early marriage
A colourful procession was brought out in the city yesterday to make Mymensingh division free from child marriage.
Mymensingh divisional office has chalked out daylong programmes ahead of the Mujib Year (Mujib Borsho) scheduled to be celebrated round the next year.
The programmes included a colourful rally, discussion meeting and human chain.
Members of different socio-cultural organisations and students of different educational institutions also took part in the procession that paraded the main thoroughfares of the city.
State Minister for Cultural Affairs KM Khalid Babu inaugurated the daylong programme as the chief guest.
Divisional Commissioner Khondoker Mustafizur Rahman and Deputy Commissioner of Mymensingh Md Mizanur Rahman, among others, addressed the programme.
The divisional commissioner said the programme was declared on December 1 this year. On the same day, they also arranged a meeting, where the marriage registrars of the division were present.
Some 20 events including meetings with union parishad chairmen, members, religious leaders and guardians and students of every educational institution in the division will be held next year.
The programme will continue until the final goal is achieved, said the divisional commissioner.
Administration and police will also remain vigilant to take immediate action against the perpetrators of early marriage, he added.
