Prof Dr Shahjahan made new BSMRSTU VC
Prof Dr M Shahjahan has been made acting Vice Chancellor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Science and Technology University (BSMRSTU) in Gopalganj seven days after Khondoker Md Nasiruddin resigned from the post of VC.
BSMRSTU registrar Dr Nuruddin Ahmed and acting new VC Prof Dr Shahjahan confirmed it to The Daily Star that they got the confirmation through a SMS from Education Ministry today.
Prof Dr M Shahjahan was chairman of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering Department (ETE) of the same university, they said.
But they did not get any official letter yet.
"The ministry has already issued a letter in this regard. We hope, the university is likely to receive it on October 9 as tomorrow is holiday," Prof Shahjahan added.
On September 30, VC Prof Khondoker Md Nasiruddin resigned, a day after an UGC probe found evidence of irregularities and corruption against him.
The VC stepped down amid student protests on the campus since September 18 for his removal from the post.
The University Grants Commission (UGC) formed the committee on September 23 at the behest of the education ministry amid student protests for removal of VC Nasiruddin for his alleged involvement in graft and irregularities.
On September 25, the five-member team, led by UGC member Muhammad Alamgir, went to the BSMRSTU campus and talked to teachers, students and others concerned. The team members stayed on the campus for two days.
Nasiruddin was appointed the VC in February 2015. The university now has 8,000 students, according to the UGC.
The students alleged that the VC was involved in corruption in recruitment of some teachers and employees.
