Poverty clouds Lipy's DU dream
Though getting chance at Dhaka University (DU) delighted all her well wishers, uncertainty over her admission due to financial constraint leaves her poor family in despair.
Lipy Khatun, daughter of late Azizar Rahman of Teesta river basin Dakkhin Gaddimari village in Hatibandha upazila, obtained the 1838th place in the merit list of 'Kha' unit this year but poverty puts her future in doubt.
Her widow mother Rahima Begum is passing days thinking how to manage money for her daughter's admission as she is unable to provide her the necessary support.
Lipy secured GPA-5 in the HSC examinations from Humanities Group from Hatibandha Women's Degree College this year. She also obtained GPA-5 in the SSC examinations from Hatibandha Shah Garibullah Girls' High School in 2016.
“I never had any tutor or private coaching in my entire study life and I never played truant,” Lipy said.
“I would prefer to study in Islamic Studies at DU and dream to be a BCS officer under administration cadre in future,” she added.
Lipy is second among three siblings. Her elder brother Rubel Miah serves as an Ansar member and her younger sister Ayesha Khatun is a student of Class X.
Lipy's father Azizar, an Ansar member, was killed by unidentified miscreants at his workplace in Natore in 2005.
After Azizar's death, her mother Rahima took over the family responsibilities and earned their livelihood by working as a farm labourer.
“We have no arable land except our homestead on five decimals of land,” Rahima said, adding, “Sometimes we have to pass our days half fed but my children never lose concentration in their study.”
Principal of Hatibandha Women's Degree College Motahar Hossain Lavlu said as Lipy belongs to a poor family she was given all possible support and facilities from the college.
“Without other's help it is quite impossible for her to enrol at DU and continue her study,” the principal added.
“We feel proud of Lipy as she brought glory not only for us but our college as well,” he said.
