Potato seed traders happy with fair price
Fair price has brought smile to potato seed traders at Boithakata Bazar in Nazirpur upazila of the district.
The traders said they incurred huge losses during the peak season due to thick fog and severe cold last year.
“We incurred losses of about Tk 150 per maund of potato seeds last year. But this year, we are making profit of about Tk 100 per maund, depending on the quality of seeds,” said Md Mizanur Rahman, a wholesaler at the bazar, adding that at least 25 men are involved with the trading.
They bought each maund of seed at Tk 400 from the wholesale traders of Rajshahi and Munshiganj and sold it at Tk 500 to Tk 600, said Mizanur.
Potato seed trading continues for three months from November, said another trader Md Faruq Hossain, adding that about 300 maunds of potato seeds are sold at the bazar every day.
Every year people from Pirojpur, Barguna, Patuakhali and Barishal buy potato seeds from Boithakata Bazar and sell those in the local markets, said trader Sohel Bahadur.
Fair price of potato seeds has made them happy this year, said another trader Kamal Akan. He hopes that if the weather remains good in the entire season, they will not face any trouble in the business.
After collecting seeds, the traders keep them in bamboo baskets for around a week, said Kamal.
