Police brutality: Inquiry finds Gopalganj ASI guilty over death of farmer

A Police Headquarters inquiry has found an assistant sub-inspector guilty in connection with the death of a farmer in Gopalganj

Md Sohel Rana, assistant inspector general (media) of PHQ, confirmed it to media through a video message yesterday.

"We have conducted an immediate inquiry after the allegation of assaulting Nikhil Talukdar was raised against ASI Shamim Hasan of Kotalipara Police Station and the inquiry primarily found the allegation's authenticity," said Sohel Rana.

A murder case has already been filed with ASI Shamim as prime accused in the death of 32-year-old farmer Nikhil Talukdar, he said, adding that the ASI and another person were arrested and produced before the court.

"We want to make it clear that we will never hesitate in taking firm and strict action against any member subject to the veracity of any allegation," said AIG Rana.

Nikhil Talukdar, from Goplaganj's Kotalipara upazila, died on Wednesday evening at Dhaka Pangu Hospital from injuries sustained during an assault by ASI Shamim.

ASI Shamim was later arrested in this connection on Sunday night in a case filed on the same night by Mintu Talukdar, brother of the deceased.
