Forest department officials arrested a poacher on Tuesday night when he was returning from the forest after hunting a deer at Jonglar Khal in Bhola's Monpura.
The arrestee was identified as Ripon, 26, son of Selim Majhi of Charfayzuddin of Monpura, said Sumon Das, range officer of Monpura.
Following secret information, a team of the forest department's range office took position inside the forest for catching the hunters on Tuesday evening and kept waiting for the hunters, he said.
“Around 9:30pm, a group of poachers came out of the forest after hunting a deer. Seeing them, the forest department team ran after them and caught a poacher named Ripon with deer hunting trap, a billhook and a large knife.
“Ripon confessed that he hunted a deer on the night along with four other hunters in the deep forest,” said the range officer.
“Hunters often change their location, especially if they sense the presence of forest department men. And so, we find it difficult to arrest the hunters.
“Ripon is the leader of a group involved in hunting deer in the forest for a long time. He has mentioned the name of other members of his group,” informed Sumon.
A case was filed with a Bhola court under Forest Act against Ripon and four others in connection with the incident. Ripon was sent to Bhola district jail on Wednesday afternoon.
The forest department has increased their surveillance in all the forests of Monpura after publication of a report on deer hunting in The Daily Star recently, said forest official.
“We are trying our best to save deer from illegal poaching,” said Sumon.
