PHQ asks people not to destroy religious harmony spreading rumour
Police Headquarters today issued a statement calling upon people not to destroy religious harmony and attack on religious synagogues by spreading rumour in the country.
The PHQ came up with the call following the mayhem in Bhola that left at least four people dead and a hundred injured today.
The common people have also been requested not to pay any heed to the rumour and extended all-out cooperation to the police force to maintain the law and order for the sake of social stability, the statement said.
Bangladesh Police has extended its sympathy to the victims of the mayhem took place at Eidgah ground Borhanuddin upazila.
To erase confusion from the people’s minds, the PQ underscores the need to project the facts behind the incidents, the statement said.
The PHQ said on October 18, a youth filed a general diary with Borhanuddin Police Station claiming that his Facebook account was hacked.
He got a phone call and someone demanded toll from him when he was filing the GD around 8.05 pm and he instantly informed the matter to the officer-in-charge of the police station.
Later, the OC informed the matter to the superintendent of police in Bhola, according to the statement of the PQ.
Using technology, police detained two youths from Patuakhali and Borhanuddin areas as the Facebook hackers and the caller on that night and they were taken to the police station for interrogation.
Meanwhile, local religious people have got angered following a comment in the hacked account that hurt the religious sentiment and the local Alem society started demanding capital punishment of the commenter, police said in the statement.
The district administrator, UNO, OC of the police station in presence of the representatives of Alem society in the area held an elaborate meeting to resolve the feud.
But, on October 20, the Alem society announced to hold a protest rally at the Eidgah ground around 11:00 am, the statement said.
Based on the allegation of the Alem society, the youth, who owns the Fcebook account, has been shown arrested and they (Alem society) have been assured to take legal action against him, but they did not cancel their programme at the Eidgah ground, it said.
Later, police imposed a ban on the gathering, but in the next day, people started gathering at that Eidgah ground setting up at least 17 loudspeakers at different points in the area.
An adequate number of policemen were deployed to avert any untoward situation in and around the area.
The superintendent of police in the district, additional inspector general of police and others top officials addressed the gathering assuring the people to take legal action in this regard and at one stage, the people started leaving the area after being managed by the local administration, the statement read.
Later, suddenly a group of people entered the Eidgah ground and started inciting the mob and they launched an attack equipped with firearms on the police officials when they were talking with the madrasa teachers inside a room there, PHQ stated.
The additional deputy inspector general of police of Barishal and two police officials sustained serious injuries in the attack.
Amid the situation, police were forced to fire tear shells first and used shotguns in line with the directives of the UNO and the executive magistrate to save people’s lives and properties, it said.
As the situation took a critical turn, the police forces were also forced to fire in line with the directives of the magistrate, the statement said.
The injured police officials were sent CMH for better treatment. A total of four people were killed in the incident, the PHQ said in its statement.
A five-member probe body was formed headed by DIG of Barishal to ensure a fair investigation into the incident and the body was asked to submit its reports by seven working days.
