Payra sea port engr stabbed, 2 arrested
Criminals stabbed the executive engineer of Payra sea port near Baliatali Kheyaghat in Kalapara upazila allegedly over a trifling matter on Sunday.
Meanwhile, police arrested the two alleged attackers -- Shakil Ahmed Pius, 26, and Juliet Talukder, 22, of Baliatali village in the upazila – the same night and produced them before a court yesterday noon that sent them to jail.
Quoting locals, police said Mostafa Ashiq Ali, 29, executive engineer of Payra sea port, had an exchange of hot words with Shakil and Juliet over a trivial matter while they were crossing the Andharmanik river by a passenger boat around 9:00pm.
After crossing the river, when Ashiq was looking for a rickshaw to go to port area the duo stabbed him on the chest with a knife and fled the scene, leaving him severe injured.
Locals rescued injured Ashiq and took him to Kalapara Upazila Health Complex, from where he was shifted to Barishal Sher-E-Bangla Medical College Hospital for better treatment the same night.
Later, following a case filed by Mohammad Shah Alam, superintendent of the port, police arrested the two attackers from the upazila headquarters on Sunday night, Officer in Charge (OC) of Kalapara Police Station Monirul Islam said.
During interrogation, the arrestees confessed their involvement in attacking engineer Ashiq Ali, OC Monirul said.
