Patients the victims
A large number of patients are deprived of adequate medical services at Bhanga Upazila Health Complex for years.
The 50-bed health complex is facing many problems, including shortage of physicians.
It is the only healthcare centre in the upazila for around three lakh people.
Established on 8.7 acres of land in Bhanga municipality in 1976, the 31-bed hospital was upgraded to a 50-bed one in 1997. But the overall situation has remained unchanged.
As it is situated beside Dhaka-Khulna and Dhaka-Barisal highways, many road accident victims are often taken to the health complex for emergency treatment, but they are deprived of the services due to shortage of doctors and out of order equipment.
“Patients have to go to private clinics for diagnostic tests as the X-ray machine of the hospital has remained inoperative since 2016. But we the poor people cannot afford such a costly private treatment,” said Rahima Begum, an attendant of a patient.
“There are only two junior consultants against 10 posts and of them, one has been on deputation to Faridpur Medical College Hospital since 2016. There are four medical officers, out of six posts at the hospital. Besides, the posts of resident medical officer, pathology medical officer, alternative care medical officer, three posts of medical laboratory assistant and two posts of pharmacist have remained vacant for long,” said Abul Hashem Sheikh, Bhanga upazila health and family planning officer.
He said they have written to the higher authorities about their problems.
