One held, nine others surrender
Police on Tuesday night arrested one of the named accused in connection with a case for assaulting a journalist in Hatibandha upazila the same day.
The arrestee, Mitu Islam, 45, is son of late Sahir Uddin of Uttar Gotamari village, OC of Hatibandha Police Station Omar Farooque said.
Earlier, injured Asaduzzaman Sazu, district correspondent of Bangla Daily Manabkantha, lodged a case with Hatibandha Police Station, accusing nine named and 30 to 40 others unnamed the same night.
The other named accuseds are Selim, Ripon, Khokon, Saiful, Safiul, Hakim, Mamum and Sirajul, the OC said.
Police yesterday produced Mitu before the Senior Judicial Magistrate's Court that sent him jail.
On the other hand, the same court granted bail to the eight named accused after they surrendered before it and sought bail.
Meanwhile, fellow journalists at a human chain yesterday demanded legal action against those involved in assaulting journalist Sazu.
Following the two-hour-long rally, they also brought out a protest procession in the upazila headquarters.
Mentionable, a group of unruly youths assaulted Sazu and vandalised his camera while he was taking photographs of procession and counter procession of two Awami League (AL) factions in Hatibandha upazila on Tuesday morning.
