Old worn-out schoolhouse
Students and teachers of Chandpur Government Primary School in Tahirpur upazila of Sunamganj have to stay amid risk for hours as classes are held at an awfully dilapidated building.
The present one-storied building of the 45-year-old school was built in 1995.
There are four teachers and 272 students in the school.
But classes are often hampered, especially during rain and storms.
During a recent visit, this correspondent found that several cracks have developed in the walls and the roof covering four classrooms of the schoolhouse, chunks of plaster have fallen off at places and the exposed rods have rusted.
“One of my classmates was injured when chunk of plaster from the roof fell on him a few days ago,” said Fatima Karim, a student of Class I.
“Classes stop and our books and khatas get wet when it rains,” said Mina Begum, a student of Class III.
“I'm really worried about my child. He doesn't want to attend classes because of the risky classroom,” said Monir Uddin, father of a student of the school.
The building poses serious risk for the innocent kids as several cracks developed in it, said Headmaster Sheren Sholomar.
School Managing Committee President Abul Kashem said, “Now all the rooms are unfit for classes due to cracks in the roof. I have submitted a written petition to the upazila nirbahi officer and the primary education officer in this regard.”
Md Akikur Reza, upazila primary education officer, said they have sent a proposal to the Local Government Engineering Department for repair or reconstruction of the risky buildings of five schools in the upazila.
Chandpur Government Primary School tops the priority list, he added.
