Nor’wester disrupts power supply in 4 Sunamganj upazilas
Many areas except headquarters of Sunamganj Sadar, Bishwambharpur, Jamalganj and Tahirpur upazilas are still without any power supply after a nor’wester swept through the area on Saturday night.
However, residents in the areas where power supply was restored complained of excessive voltage fluctuations.
Aside from damaging electric lines and poles, the storm damaged many houses by toppling large trees.
While many residents were seen busy trying to fix their houses, others were trying to find ways to cope with the boiling heat without any running electric fan in their houses.
Tahirpur upazila town was the first out of the four affected upazilas to restore electricity on Sunday afternoon.
A resident, Amirul Islam, said they had been without power since 10:00pm on Saturday.
Supply of electricity in Bishwambharpur upazila town resumed after around 30 hours of disruption, said resident Swapan Kumar Barman.
Faisal Amin, a resident of Selimganj area in Jamalganj upazila, said they had been experiencing power outage since Saturday night and it was restored only around 3:00pm yesterday.
Power supply in Bananipara area of Sunamganj Sadar became unstable since the storm lashed out on the area on Saturday night. Frequent outages are causing disruptions to daily activities and damaging electrical equipment, complained locals.
Saidul Islam of the area said, their water tanks are running dry while they cannot cool themselves off in the ongoing heat spell as they cannot operate water pumps or electric fans due to frequent power cuts.
Electricity in the area was shut down after a large tree fell on his house on Saturday night, said Mohammad Mia from the same area.
In the same upazila, Mohammadpur area resident Zakir Ahmed said, “There’s no power here since 10 o’clock on Saturday night. But it’s hard to understand how the power department works. It’s impossible to reach them with a complaint.”
Contacted, Akhil Kumar Saha, general manager of Rural Electrification Board in Sunamganj, said the situation was caused by a number of fallen trees on the distribution lines at several locations on Saturday night.
Normal supply of electricity was reinstated in Sunamganj Sadar on Sunday afternoon and their workers were working relentlessly to do the same in Bishwambharpur, Jamalganj and Tahirpur upazilas, he also said.
