No alarm over expired medicine: Papon
Bangladesh Association of Pharmaceutical Industries (BAPI) President Nazmul Hassan Papon has said it is not unusual to have expired medicine at pharmacies.
“The pharmaceutical companies take back those medicines routinely. It is a continuous process,” Papon, also president of Bangladesh Cricket Board, said.
He was speaking to reporters today in reflection of report that found 93 per cent pharmacies in Dhaka keep expired medicine.
“There might be some expired medicines left at the pharmacies, however, it is not a matter of concern,” Papon said at a press conference at his residence.
“As per the rule, the limit of expired drugs should not cross five per cent. The top companies under BAPI always try to maintain the process through their own mechanism,” he said.
“There might be some deviation in terms of those companies which lack such mechanism,” Papon also said.
According to standard operating procedure (SOP), the expired drugs are brought back to Dhaka and destroyed thereon. He urged all concerned not to be worried over the report.
WHAT DID THE REPORT SAY?
According to the report of the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection published on June 10 the directorate, in between November 2018 and April 2019, conducted mobile court drives at 200 pharmacies in different areas of the capital -- including Gulshan, Mirpur, Kalabagan -- and found expired drugs at about 186 stores.
