Moulvibazar AL 'rebels' win 4 of 7 UZ chairman posts

Awmai League (AL) leaders, contesting as independent candidates after failing to get nomination from the party, defeated party nominees in four of the seven upazilas in Moulvibazar in the upazila parishad elections held on Monday.

The 'rebel' candidates won against AL's election symbol 'boat' in Rajnagar, Kulaura, Juri and Barlekha upazilas.

AL-nominated chairman candidates won the polls in Kamalganj and Srimangal and the candidate from the party was elected uncontested in Maulvibazar Sadar upazila.

Mohammad Monjurul Alam, election officer and returning officer in Moulvibazar, said the election was peaceful although the voters' presence was not that high.

According to sources at district returning officer's office, the poll results for chairman posts are as follows:

Barlekha: Upazila AL Organizing Secretary Shoeb Ahmad, contesting as independent candidate, won with 42,750 votes while AL-nominated candidate upazila AL Joint General Secretary Rafiqul Islam, also the incumbent chairman, got 17,496 votes.

Juri: AL's 'rebel' candidate MA Moid was elected with 25,000 votes. His closest competitor, also a 'rebel' candidate, upazila Swechchhasebak League convenor and former upazila vice chairman Kishore Roy Chowdhury got 20,066 votes. AL nominated candidate, also the incumbent chairman, Gulshan Ara got 5,846 votes.

Kulaura: Upazila AL Joint Secretary AKM Safi Ahmed Solman got elected with 54,525 votes while his nearest rival AL-nominated ASM Kamrul Islam, the incumbent chairman, got 24,169 votes.

Rajnagar: Rebel AL candidate Shahjahan Khan got 27,376 votes. His nearest rival, another rebel candidate, upazila AL President Mizbahuddoza alias Bhelai got 21,327 votes. AL-nominated candidate upazila AL General Secretary Askir Khan, also incumbent upazila parishad chairman, got 10,603 votes.

Kamalganj: AL Working Committee member Rafiqur Rahman, the party nominee in the upazila parishad polls, got 49,184 votes while rebel candidate Imtiaz Ahmad bagged 19,450.

Srimangal upazila: AL nominated Randhir Kumar Deb, the incumbent chairman, got 51,482 votes. His nearest rival upazila Krishak League leader Afzal Haque got 14,486 votes.

In Moulvibazar Sadar, district AL's Joint General Secretary Kamal Hossain was elected uncontested.
