Man held in Ctg for spreading coronavirus rumour about law minister

Police have arrested a man from Chattogram for spreading a rumour on Facebook saying Law Minister Anisul Huq was infected with coronavirus.

Sazzad Hossain Babar, 35, was arrested from Dohazari area of Chattogram's Chandanaish upazila yesterday evening, said Keshob Chakrabarty, officer-in-charge of Chandanaish Police Station.

The arrest came after M Shakhwat Hossain Nayan, general secretary of Brahmanbaria's Akhaura upazila unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League, yesterday afternoon lodged a written complaint with the Akhaura police station against Sazzad for spreading the rumour.

Rasul Ahmed Nizami, officer-in-charge of Akhaura Police Station, told our Brahmanbaria correspondent that Sazzad posted a status on his Facebook profile around 9:20pm on Wednesday saying, "Law Minister Anisul Huq infected with coronavirus."

Sazzad, son of Ramjan Ali in Dohazari area, was a former member of the convener committee of Chattogram district (south) of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) and also a former senior joint secretary of Chandanaish upazila unit JCD, reports our Brahmanbaria correspondent.

Today, Chandanaish Police produced Sazzad before a Chattogram court this noon.

Later, the court asked police to produce the accused before Brahmmbaria district court as the case was filed with Brahmanbaria's Akhaura Police Station, said OC Nizami.

"Law Minister Anisul Huq is doing well and he is staying at his Banani residence in Dhaka," Public Relations Officer of Law Ministry Md Rezaul Karim told The Daily Star at 4:20pm today.
