Man gets life term for killing children, injuring wife
A court in Pirojpur yesterday handed down life term imprisonment to a man for killing his two children and injuring his wife and own brother with a sharp weapon in 2012.
The convicted is Jakir Hossain Howlader, 49, son of late Aziz Howlader from Dhawa Nalkata village in Bhandaria upazila.
Md Samsul Haque, additional district and sessions judge in Pirojpur, delivered the verdict with Jakir being present before the court. The court also fined him TK 20,000. In case the convict fails to pay the fine, he will have to serve an additional six months in jail.
According to the prosecution, Jakir was in a frustrated state after being unable to repay a large sum of money that he borrowed from a number of people.
Around noon on October 9 in 2012, Jakir suddenly started hacking his wife Lipi Begum, 30, their two sons -- Shohag, 14, and Imran, 8 -- and daughter Sultana, 6, with a sharp weapon.
When his elder brother Abul Hossain Howlader went to save them, he also injured him with the weapon and fled the scene.
Locals sent the injured to Bhandaria Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared Jakir’s son Imran and daughter Sultana dead.
The convict’s brother Abul Hossain Howlader filed a case accusing Jakir later that day.
