Man dies while ‘fleeing with hilsa’
A man fell into ditch and died while he was allegedly fleeing with mother hilsa during the ongoing ban period at Kalakopa village in Rajapur upazila on Friday night.
The deceased was identified as Saudi expatriate Babul Hawlader, 50, son of late Yusuf Ali of Charuttampur village, said Md Jahid Hossain, officer-in-charge of Rajapur Police Station.
Informed that a group of people were catching mother hilsa in the Bishkhali river, a mobile court, led by Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Shohag Howlader, raided the area and detained three men. However, their cohorts managed to flee the scene.
The court later sentenced the trio to one year’s imprisonment each for catching the fish during the ongoing ban period, said the UNO.
Locals said a group of unknown youths chased Babul while fleeing with mother hilsa from the river. He then fell into a ditch at Kalakopa and died.
Meanwhile, some villagers suspect that Babul was fleeing the area amid fear of arrest.
On information, police recovered the body and sent it to Jhalakathi Sadar Hospital for autopsy, said Md Shakhawat Hossain, assistant superintendent of police.
An unnatural death case was filed in this connection, said the ASP.
No policemen chased anybody during the drive, said the police official.
