Man dies in police custody in Chapainawabganj
A man died in police custody in Sadar upazila of Chapainawabganj tonight -- a day after a team of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) arrested him.
The deceased was identified as Afsar Ali (35), son of Mohsin Ali of Tikrampur-Moddhopara in Chapainawabganj municipal area, said Mahbubul Alam Khan, additional superintendent of Chapainawabganj Police.
Mahbubul said Rab members arrested Afsar from Sundarpur-Bagdanga village of Sadar upazila with one kg and 195 grams of heroin yesterday noon.
Later, Rab handed him over to Sadar Police Station and filed a case against him on the same day.
Today, police produced him before the judicial magistrate court, seeking remand, said the police official.
As the court placed Afsar on a one-day remand, police took him in custody in the Sadar Police Station where he "attempted to hang himself around 7:00pm", he said.
After seeing this on CCTV, police rescued him and took him to Chapainawabganj Adhunik Sadar Hospital where he died one hour later, the additional SP claimed.
Dr Rohani Akhtar, emergency medical officer of the Sadar Hospital said police took the man at the hospital with chest pain and breathing problem.
