Lying unused for years
A bridge over a canal on Sangura-Ratandia road in Rajbari has become unusable for vehicles as its approach road gets washed away by rainevery year.
The Ministry of Relief and Disaster Management built the 22-foot-long bridge over a canal in Kader Halot area under Jamalpur union in Baliakandi upazila at a cost of Tk 17.93 lakh in the 2015-2016 fiscal year.
During a recent visit to the spot, this correspondent saw that the approach road on the eastern side of Sangura-Ratandia road has been washed away by rain water. Local people cross the canal over a bamboo bridge, but no vehicle can cross it.
As the bridge was made with low quality materials, the structure along with the approach roads was damaged within a few months of construction, locals said.
The contractor of the bridge was Ahasanul Hakim alias Sadan, joint secretary of Baliakandi upazila unit of Awami League (AL) and also a member of Rajbari district committee of AL, they said.
The Sangura-Ratandia road is the easy way for villagers to go to district headquarters as it saves time and money, but they cannot use it as the approach road is damaged, said Giash Mia of Sangura village.
A large number of farmers carrying agro-products face trouble while crossing the canal over the bamboo bridge to go to market and collect the crops from their fields, said Motiar Mollah of Shreenathpur village.
“I have made the bridge properly, so I have no comment about it,” contractor Sadan said.
Jamalpur Union Parishad Chairman Yunus Ali Sarder said he has heard about the bad condition of the bridge but has not visited the spot.
“I was not here when the bridge was made. I have visited the spot and we will rebuild the damaged approach road in the dry season,” said Nasrin Sultana, project implementation officer of Baliakandi upazila.
