LPG price hike in 3 northern districts
Consumers, specially people with low income in Dinajpur, Rangpur and Joypurhat have been struggling hard as prices of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinders have shot up in the last three weeks.
Price of each cylinder started soaring since the beginning of this month and has gone up by Tk 130 to Tk 150 in local markets, trades said.
According to the traders in the three districts, usually LPG cylinders of different companies like Jamuna, Basundhara and Omera are available in the markets.
Traders said now a cylinder with 12 kilograms of LP gas is being sold at between Tk 1,050 to Tk 1,100 while it selling at Tk 930 to Tk 950 only a couple of weeks ago.
“The sudden hike of LP gas cylinder prices is a matter of concern for the middle income group families like us,” Arpita Datta of Barabandar area in Dinajpur municipality said.
“Although I bought an LPG cylinder for Tk 930 in September, I had to pay Tk 1,050 for the same cylinder last Thursday,” she added.
She urged the government to keep the LPG cylinder price at a tolerable level and demanded strong monitoring at local markets.
During recent visits to different markets in Dinajpur and Rangpur, this correspondent saw LPG traders were charging Tk 1,100 for each cylinder.
Without any prior notice and specific reason the LPG companies started raising the cylinder price since September 30, said Abdul Bari, a LPG dealer in Maldahpatty area under Dinajpur Municipality.
Due to the price hike, sale of LPG has slowed down a bit in the last couple of days, he said.
Restaurant owners in the three districts are bearing the brunt because of the high price of LPG cylinders.
Ranjit Kundu, a restaurant owner in Dinajpur town, said he has been spending additional Tk 750 every day since the price started soaring in early October.
