Land grabbing, extortion alleged against Rajapur BCL chief
Representatives of 36 families of three villages under Rajapur upazila in Jhalakathi at a press conference yesterday brought allegations of extortion and land grabbing against Ahsan Habib Rubel, upazila unit president of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL).
Md Siddikur Rahaman, a retired banker, read out a written complaint on behalf of the 36 families at the press conference at Rajapur Muktijoddha Centre.
Rubel and his father Tofazzel Hossain grabbed many pieces of lands belonging to the families, with the help of false documents, goes the allegation.
The BCL leader and his men demanded huge sums of money during purchase of any land or start of building construction in the area near Rajapur Government College, said speakers at the press conference.
“Rubel and his father started constructing a building after grabbing our land on Rajapur Jail Road near their house. The building work was suspended as the court issued an order, following our petition,” said Golam Mawla, a victim.
The half-done building is seen on the roadside for around two years, said a local.
“I cannot go to my land freely due to interference by Rubel and his men. They want to grab my land and made false documents for the purpose,” said Abdus Shukur, a college teacher of the area.
Rubel’s family filed several false civil cases with Jhalakathi court against the 36 families, said the alleged victims.
Seeking anonymity, a shopkeeper of Jail Road said they did not file any allegation against extortion by the BCL leader due to fear.
Contacted, Rubel said, “A group of people are making conspiracy against me to destroy my political career and degrade my social status. The allegations against me and my father are false.”
