Kushtia AL leader arrested under ICT act
A local Awami League (AL) leader was held under the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Act over Facebook post in the town early yesterday.
The arrestee is Mominur Rahman Momiz, former general secretary of Kushtia town unit AL. He was expelled from the party in 2015.
SM Tanvir Arafath, superintendent of police (SP), said one Zahirul Islam, an activist of Kumarkhali upazila unit of AL, filed a case with Kumarkhali Police Station under ICT Act accusing three people, including Momiz, on Wednesday night.
The other accuse are Robi Ahmed and Shimul Ahmed.
According to the case statement, the trio were spreading false information about local lawmaker Selim Altaf George through social media.
After a case was filed in this connection, police, on information, raided the house of Momiz's father-in-law house in Narikeltola area of Kushtia town around 2:30am yesterday and arrested him, said the SP.
The arrestee was later produced before Kushtia chief judicial magistrate's court, which sent him to jail.
The law enforcers were raiding different areas to arrest the other accused, said the police official.
