Journos should not be politically partisan
In journalism, nobody should be politically motivated and must tell the truth, veteran journalist Ranesh Maitra told journalists in Pabna yesterday at the reception given to him for getting Ekushey Padak in journalism this year.
“I have been involved in politics since my student life, but when I became a journalist I never allowed politics to prevent me from trying to reveal the truth through my writings. But nowadays, we often do not speak the truth due to our partisan motivation,” he said, while speaking as chief guest at the programme held at Pabna Press Club yesterday.
He reminisced about the critical period for journalists during the rule of the Pakistani military governments, saying they never bowed their heads in front of the autocratic regimes.
“During that time, we were often tortured for telling the truth, but never stopped our writing,” he said, adding that journalists must tell the truth for the sake of the people.
If journalists do not dare to speak the truth people will be in the dark, so journalists must avoid partisan view for the sake of real journalism, Maitra added.
President of Pabna Press Club Prof Shibojit Nag chaired the reception programme while veteran journalists Robiul Islam Robi, Abdul Matin Khan, Md Mohiuddin, Kamal Ahmed Siddique, ABM Fazlur Rahman spoke on the occasion, among others.
Founder of Pabna Press Club, Maitra was in Australia when the awards were presented.
