Jashore rape: Cops do not find SI’s involvement
A police investigation did not find any evidence of involvement of Sub-Inspector Khairul Islam in the rape of a woman at Sharsha Upazila in Jashore in September last year, investigators said today.
A probe by the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) said that the woman had consensual physical relations with one of the three men -- Abdul Latif, 50 -- she had named as accused in a case she filed following the incident.
Analysing mobile phone call lists, government records and statements of other suspects, it was not proved primarily that SI Khairul was present at the scene on September 3, said Jashore PBI Additional Superintendent of Police M K H Jahangir Hossain.
“Primarily it was not proved through DNA tests that SI Khairul, in-charge of Gorpara Camp, and two other accused were involved,” the officer said.
After over four months of investigation into the sensational case, the PBI was tasked to investigate the incident.
It disclosed their probe findings at a press briefing at the local PBI office today.
Contacted, the 30-year-old victim said, “I have no allegation against police.”
She refused to say anything else.
Following the rape that came to light after the mother of two went to a hospital in Jashore and filed a case accusing four men, including one who had allegedly identified himself as SI Khairul.
Khairul was, however, not included in the case.
A day later she claimed that although she recognised Khairul, she did not name him out of fear when senior police officers brought the SI before her.
The woman alleged that Khairul and a few others went to her house around 2:30am on September 3 and demanded Tk 50,000 for the release of her husband, who was arrested only days earlier in a drugs-related case. But when she refused to give any money, the SI and others raped her.
Afterwards, the three named accused were arrested and Abdul Latif confessed to having consensual relations with the woman that night.
In the confessional statement, the accused said he knew the complainant and they were acquainted through family.
Jahangir Hossain, quoting the statement, said the two had been involved in a relationship and the DNA test result also found involvement also had illicit relationship more than once even before the incident. The DNA test result also found involvement of the accused.
The two other named accused were also known to the complainant and had enmity with her, the officer said.
The PBI Addl SP said as Latif was previously known to her, he told her he would get her husband acquitted from the drugs-related charges.
According to the confessional statement, as part of the deal, the complainant called Latif from her own phone and met him that night.
PBI Inspector Sheikh Monwar Hossain, also the investigation officer of the case, said he would submit the police report to the court as soon as possible.
