Speakers at a discussion, marking International Anti-Corruption Day yesterday in Tangail, expressed concern over rising trend of corruption in every section of the society.
Zila Durneeti Protirodh Committee organised the programme at conference room of Tangail deputy commissioner (DC).
Moderated by Tarun Yusuf, general secretary of the committee, Tangail DC Shahidul Islam addressed the discussion as the chief guest.
Saying that corruption has taken the form of social illness and it is affecting the country’s development, the speakers urged enactment of tougher laws as well as united efforts to eradicate corruption from the society.
Among others, Nazrul Islam, deputy director of Local Government Department; Shafiqul Islam, additional superintendent of police in Tangail; Mostafizur Rahman, deputy director of district coordination office of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC); Kazi Golam Ahad, senior information officer in Tangail; and Ataur Rahman Azad, vice-president of Zila Durneeti Protirodh Committee, also spoke at the programme.
Earlier, the day’s events started with hoisting of the national flag at the ACC office in the town.
With an aim to raise awareness against corruption, an hour-long human chain was later formed in front of the town’s Shaheed Minar. People from all walks of life, including government officials, representatives of different social organisations and students, took part at the human chain.
