Intercity train demanded
A human chain was formed yesterday in front of Nawabganj Government College in Chapainawabganj town demanding immediate introduction of intercity train services between the town and the capital city.
Leaders and workers of different political parties, representatives from different professional bodies, social rights activists, and members of Chapainawabganj Nagorik Committee joined the event, organised by Chapainawabganj Zila Basi.
The participants later at a rally said people of Chapainawabganj have to endure immense sufferings when they travel to the capital by train as they have to first travel 50 kilometres, to Rajshahi, before heading toward Dhaka.
The speakers said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at a rally in the town had declared that intercity train services between Dhaka and Chapainawabganj would be introduced soon.
After her declaration, on February 1, 2012, Bangladesh Railway introduced a shuttle train on Chapainawabganj-Rajshahi route. However, no steps were taken as yet to introduce direct intercity train services between Chapainawabganj and Dhaka, they also said.
Among others, Monim Ud Dowla Chowdhury, chairman of Red Crescent Society district unit; social activist Shafiqul Alam; Erfan Ali, president of Chapainawabganj Chambers of Commerce and Industry; Advocate Nazrul Islam, and former student leader Shahidul Huda Alok, spoke at the rally.
