Infant rescued while on sale in Pabna
A childless couple among four people were held on charge of attempting to sell a 22-day-old infant at Hemayetpur Kazipara village in Sadar upazila on Wednesday.
Police also rescued the baby from the spot. The infant is now kept in the safe home under social welfare department in Rajshahi.
The arrestees are day labourer Md Helal Uddin, 40, his wife Anni Khatun, father-in-law Md Abdullah and mother-in-law Ruji Begum of the village. Helal worked as a construction worker in Dhaka.
Helal took the baby from a poor couple, day labourer Md Shafiqul Islam and his wife, in the capital’s Uttara last week promising to raise the baby in his family, said Sub-Inspector (SI) Md Habibur Rahman, in-charge of Hemayetpur police camp.
But he attempted to sell the baby to another couple of the village for Tk 20,000 on Wednesday, said the SI.
On information, police rushed to the village and rescued the baby. They also arrested the four from the spot.
A team of Pabna police went to the capital in search of the real parents of the baby, but they are yet to find them, said the SI.
