Govt official’s wife hospitalised after he assaults her
Police rescued the wife of a government official in Shahrasti upazila of Chandpur and admitted her to hospital after her husband allegedly beat her up possibly under the influence of drugs.
The incident took place late last night when Md Sabuj, project implementation officer (PIO) in the upazila, returned home and started beating his wife until she lost consciousness, reports our Chandpur correspondent. She was later rescued by neighbours.
Sabuj returned home with Upazila Krishak League Organising Secretary Redwan Miji late at night and then assaulted his wife in front of his house, Shah Alam, officer-in-charge of Shahrasti Police Station, told The Daily Star.
At the time, Redwan had also lost consciousness, with police suspecting it to be a case of drug overdose. The two men had been taking yaba till late night before the incident, police alleged.
On information, law enforcers from the station led by Sub-Inspector Jahed went to the spot and rescued. She was initially admitted to upazila health complex and later shifted to a private hospital in the upazila, the OC said.
"We are yet to receive any complaint against Md Sabuj over the incident. However, Redwan has been arrested with 70 yaba pills and a locally-made weapon in his possession and a case has been filed against him in this connection," OC Shah Alam said.
Locals alleged that Md Sabuj recently misappropriated the government's relief materials for Covid-19 affected people in the upazila and began consuming yaba with Redwan for a while.
The Daily Star tried to reach Sabuj for comments but he did not answer his phone.
