Good governance needed in Railway sector: Agriculture minister
Agriculture Minister Abdur Razzaque today in parliament underscored the need for ensuring good governance in the railway sector by curbing irregularities, corruption and ticket black marketing.
“All irregularities will be stopped if the good governance can be established,” he said while replying to a supplementary question from BNP MP elected from reserved seats for women in parliament Rumeen Farhana in the Parliament.
Razzaque was giving reply to MPs queries in question-answer session in absence of Railways Minister Nurul Islam Sujan.
Razzaque while giving reference to his driver said that it was seen that there is no vacant seat in a particular train, but there were vacant seats in that train.
Another BNP MP Harunur Rashid proposed to allot unused Khash lands of Bangladesh Railways to the landless people of the country.
Razzaque welcomed the proposal and said that it was a beautiful proposal. “I also thought that and I will place this in the cabinet meeting,” he said.
He requested the BNP MPs to come up such good proposals in the parliament from which the nation could be benefitted. “Your popularity will also be increased,” he added.
In reply to a written question from M Mozaffar Hossain elected from Jamalpur-5, Railways Minister Nurul Islam Sujan said that the amount of Railways land in 1972 was 60,405.85 acres while the amount is 58,606.57 acres under the occupancy of the Railways.
He mentioned that Bangladesh Railways earned Tk 459.34 crore in 2018-19 fiscal by leasing out its lands.
The Minister said that the outstanding amount of the Bangladesh Railways from different organizations and lease takers is Tk 124.43 crore.
While answering to a question from reserved women seat Gloria Jharna, the Railways Minister said that some 21 persons died and 141 injured in 2019 in various accidents occurred in the railways.
Responding to another reserved women seat Shamsun Nahar, he said that some 1048 accidents occurred in the railways from 2008 to 2019 where 59 persons died and 433 injured.
