Feud Over Land: One to die, four get life terms for murder
A court here yesterday sentenced a man to death and four others to life term imprisonment for killing a neighbour in 2013.
Additional District and Session's Judge Shawkat Ali also jailed three other accused for two years and acquitted 12 more, as charges brought against them were not be proved.
The court also fined the death row convict, Rabiul Islam alias Rabu, 25, son of Abul Kalam Azad of Purbo Jagot village in Gomostapur upazila, Tk 1 lakh.
While the lifers, Kader, 27, Shamsul, 30, Sham Mohammad, 57, and Apple, 20, of Mangoltara village in Niamotpur upazila of Naogaon, were fined Tk 50,000 each.
Meanwhile, three other accused in the murder case--Enamul Haque, 46, and Sharif, 25, of Mangoltara village, and Aynal Haque, 35, of Purbo Jagot village-- were jailed for two years and fined Tk 5,000 each.
According to the prosecution, there had been a land dispute between the convicts and Shamsuddin Tagor, 48, of Purbo Jagot village for long.
As a sequel to the enmity, a group of men, equipped with sticks and sharp weapons attacked Shamsuddin near his house while he was returning from Enayetpur Bazar by a motorcycle on January 22, 2013, leaving him injured.
The following morning, Shamsuddin succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.
Victim's elder brother Jamshed Ali filed a murder case with Gomostapur Police Station accusing 22 people the same day.
After investigation, Sub Inspector Nur Mohammad submitted the charge sheet against 21 people on April 30 the same year.
