ASP of Naval Police suspended over assault of Faridpur environment dept officials
Authorities have suspended an additional superintendent of Naval Police for allegedly assaulting officials of the environment department in Faridpur.
The Public Security Division under the Ministry of Home Affairs issued a notification to this end this evening.
Sumit Chowdhury, additional superintendent of Naval Police in Faridpur, has been suspended for violating the code of conduct and attached to the Police Department as per the notification, effective immediately, it read.
Earlier today, a general diary was filed against ASP Sumit with Faridpur Sadar Police Station on charges of beating up officials of the environment department yesterday night.
"A man came to our office in an intoxicated state and started swearing without any provocation around 4:00pm on Tuesday. At that time, he beat up my staff. When I went to talk with him, he also slapped me. Scared, I left the office and informed the Deputy Commissioner and the Superintendent of Police," said Lutfar Rahman, deputy director of the environment department in Faridpur.
"Later I came to know that he was the assistant superintendent of Naval Police. Their office is close to ours," he added.
Jamal Pasha, additional superintendent of police in Faridpur, Dipok Kumar, additional district magistrate and Masum Raza, upazila nirbahi officer of Sadar upazila visited the place after they were informed about the matter.
Abdullah Arif, superintendent of naval police in Faridpur said, "Sumit Chowdhury was drunk. A complaint was lodged against him with our higher authority on June 26 for assault. If immediate action had been taken then, this incident would not have taken place."
"They are both government officials. We have informed the matter to two higher authorities. Along with that, the written complaint made by the deputy director of the Department of Environment is being investigated as a general diary. Additional police have been deployed at the Department of Environment to prevent any further incident."
