Ex-BCL leader hacked to death
A former Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leader was hacked to death on Wednesday over catching fish in a pond in Sankipur village under Dashmina upazila.
The deceased Rakib Hawlader, 25, was former joint secretary of Betagi-Sankipur union unit of BCL, said Dashmina Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Raton Krishna Chowdhury.
Rakib's sister-in-law Surma Begum and 17-month-old Zishan, only son of Rakib, were injured in the incident.
Police arrested Shirin Akhter, 28, and Nupur Akhter, 25, cousins of Rakib, for their alleged involvement.
Md Milon Hawlader, elder brother of Rakib, said Rakib was going to catch fish in the pond of their house when Shirin and Nupur stopped him. At one a stage, they hacked Rakib with sharp weapons.
Hearing the hue and cry, Surma went to the spot with Zisan in her arms and Shirin and Nupur attacked her also. Locals and relatives took Rakib, Surma and Zisan to Dashmina Upazila Hospital where the doctor declared Rakib dead.
The doctor also referred Surma and Zishan to Barishal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital.
Surma was later referred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital as her condition is serious, Milon said.
Abdus Sattar, father of Rakib, filed a murder case with Dashmina Police Station, accusing nine people.
“We have arrested two women allegedly involved in the matter and legal steps will be taken after investigation,” the OC said.
