'Early marriage must stop'
Early marriage is a curse and should be stopped for achieving overall development of the country, speakers at a seminar in Mymensingh town yesterday said.
Two non-governmental organisations--Reproductive Health Services, Training and Education Programme (RHSTEP) and Hello, I Am--jointly organised the programme at the auditorium of Mymensingh Sadar Upazila Parishad in the morning.
The speakers at the programme said without an end to early marriage, a healthy and self-reliant Bangladesh, which the governmental and non-governmental organisations are trying to build for decades, is not possible.
They urged the public representatives, especially the union parishad chairmen concerned, and general people to come forward and tell the poor parents about the adverse effects of early marriage and eradicate the practice from the society.
Early marriage and pregnancy at a tender age also put their health at risk and lead to school dropout.
Besides, the participants urged police and journalists from different media to play a vital role in this regard.
