Drug peddler shot in 'gunfight'
A suspected drug peddler sustained bullet injuries during an alleged 'gunfight' between two rival gangs of drug peddlers in Joypurhat's Akkelpur upazila early yesterday.
Injured Rashidul Islam, 45, of Raynagar village, is now undergoing treatment at Joypurhat Modern Hospital under police custody.
Police also seized a pistol, one bullet and 47 bottles of contraband Phensidyl syrup from the spot, police said.
Quoting locals of Koyasoba village, police said villagers heard several gunshots when two rival groups of drug peddlers were exchanging fire around 1:00am over taking control of illegal drug business in the area.
Being informed by the villagers, a police team reached the spot and the two clashing groups fled the scene, sensing the presence of the law enforcers.
Police later rescued Rashidul and admitted him to the hospital.
Officer-in-Charge of Akkelpur Police Station Kiran Chandra Roy said Rashidul is an accused in seven drug peddling cases.
