Driver killed, two others injured in cylinder blast
A man was killed and at least two others were injured in a gas cylinder explosion at a workshop in Noymail area on Dhaka-Bogura highway under Shajahanpur upazila yesterday.
The deceased, Farid Uddin, 45, an auto-rickshaw driver, was son of Mobarak Ali of Sonaidighi village in the upazila.
Critically injured workshop owner Khairul Islam, 30, son of Md Mostafa of Chanbaria village in the upazila, and Nazmul Haque, 27, son of Golam Rabbani of Damua village in Sherpur upazila, are now undergoing treatment at Bogura Shaheed Ziaur Rahaman Medical College Hospital (SZMCH).
One of the eye witnesses, Firoz Ahmed, said the incident occurred when the cylinder of a vulcanizing machine at Khairul's shop exploded with a big bang around 10:15pm.
A part of the cylinder hit Farid while he was pumping air in his auto-rickshaw tyre in an adjacent shop, leaving him critically injured, he said.
Local people rescued the trio and took them to SZMCH where Farid died while undergoing treatment, Sub-Inspector of Shajahanpur Police Station Zahangir Alam said.
