Digital Security Act: Zila Parishad chair, 1 other sued
A defamation case was filed on Thursday under the Digital Security Act against Brahmanbaria Zila Parishad Chairman Shafiqul Alam and adviser of district unit of Awami League Amanul Haque Sentu.
Al Mamun Sarkar, general secretary of AL’s district unit, filed the case with Brahmanbaria Sadar Police Station.
According to the case statement, the chairman of Brahmanbaria Zila Parishad organised a reception for freedom fighters on December 16, 2019.
But after an attack was carried out during the programme, Shafiqul and Amanul made defamatory and misleading statements to the media against local lawmaker RAM Obaidul Muktadir Chowdhury and Al Mamun Sarkar.
Speaking with The Daily Star, complainant Al Mamun Sarkar said a legal notice was served on the two accused, seeking withdrawal of their statements.
The case was filed under the Digital Security Act as they did not respond to the notice.
Shafiqul Alam, the chairman of the zila parishad, said, “The case was filed against me out of political vengeance. I condemn the [filing of] the case and I will face it following due legal procedure.”
Mohammad Selim Uddin, officer-in-charge of Brahmanbaria Sadar Police Station, said, “Police is trying to arrest the accused.”
