Cycling against social menaces
Hundreds of schoolgirls took part in cycling in different areas of the district yesterday as part of an awareness campaign against social menaces like child marriage, dowry, stalking, drug abuse and militancy.
Simultaneously, around a hundred youths participated in a mini-marathon in the district town for the same purpose.
One hundred schoolgirls from different high schools started cycling towards Baliadangi upazila headquarters from the town’s central Shaheed Minar premises, following inauguration by Deputy Commissioner Dr KM Kamruzzaman Selim.
Deputy Managing Director of PKSF Fazlul Quader attended the event as chief guest while Superintendent of Police Md Moniruzzaman presided over the programme.
From the same spot, around 100 youths started a marathon race for Thakurgaon Road Jubo Shangshad ground in the municipality while four other groups (each comprising 100 schoolgirls) started cycling from Baliadangi to Haripur, Haripur to Ranishankoil, Ranishankoil to Pirganj and Pirganj to Thakurgaon Sadar.
Non-governmental organisation Eco Social Development Organisation (ESDO) and Palli Karma-Shahayak Foundation (PKSF) jointly organised the programme in association with district administration, police administration and community policing in Thakurgaon.
Emphasising the need of cultural development the speakers said until cultural development it is hard to achieve sustainable development.
Such type of initiative helps to develop creativity of the youngsters which also help to keep them away from evil acts, they said.
Along with awareness campaigns against social evils, they organise traditional games, wall magazine, debate competitions, discussion on ‘Liberation War’, cultural events and indoor games in different high schools of five upazilas of the district, said ESDO Executive Director Dr Mohammad Shaheed Uz Zaman.
