‘Criminal’ killed by mob
An alleged criminal was killed in a mob beating in Jashore while a muazzin was hacked to death in Jhenidah on Tuesday.
Sunny Hossain, 23, was beaten to death in Shangkarpur Bus Terminal area of Jashore town, reports our Benapole correspondent.
The deceased, son of Dhanu Mia of the area, was accused in an extortion case, said Apurba Hasan, officer-in-charge (OC) of Jashore Kotwali Police Station.
There was a longstanding conflict between Sunny and Nayan Hossain, son of Faruk Hossain in the same area, over extorting money at the bus terminal.
On Tuesday night, a gang, led by Sunny and his accomplice Ananda Sen, 24, son of Ashok Sen in Shangkarpur area, hurled a bomb at Nayan, leaving him injured.
At one stage, locals caught the duo and gave them a good beating, leaving them seriously injured. They were admitted to Jashore Medical College Hospital where doctors declared Sunny dead.
A case was filed in this connection, said the OC.
In Jhenidah, a muazzin of a mosque was hacked dead at Baniabah village in Sadar upazila, reports our correspondent.
The victim was Sohel Rana, 24, son of Md Bokhtiar Rahman of Laxmikundo village in Kotchandpur upazila, and a muazzin of Chapali mosque in Kaliganj upazila. He was also student of Shoiyeb Nagar Dakhil Madrasa in Kaliganj.
Locals said he went out of the mosque to attend a family programme on Monday evening and did not return since then.
On information, police recovered the body from a jute filed in the morning and sent it to a hospital for autopsy, said Mizanur Rahman, OC of Sadar Police Station.
One Raju Ahmed, 25, of Sadar upazila, and his wife Julia Khatun, 18, were arrested in this connection, said the police official.
