Coronavirus Outbreak: Tourists shy away from Sundarbans, Shat Gambuj
Bagerhat's world heritage sites Shat Gambuj Mosque area and the Sundarbans, which used to be buzzing with tourists, sees fast decline in the number of visitors, apparently amid worry due to the outbreak of coronavirus.
"Too many tourists used to visit the area. But their number drastically fell from last week for coronavirus," said Idrish Dakuya, a local boatman who carries visitors to the Sundarbans.
"We could make a decent earning by carrying the tourists, but due to this disease, only a few people arrive now. We have to wait for long to get passengers. We don't want to come out in such a situation but we have to think about maintenance of the family," he added.
Lutfor Sheikh, a tourist from Rajshahi, said he is going back home shortly after visiting Karamjol due to coronavirus outbreak.
Azad Kabir, acting officer of Karamjol Wildlife Breeding and Eco-Tourism Center of the Sundarbans East Forest Division, said, "Usually 1000 to 1500 visitors came to visit here. But on Tuesday, only 300 visitors came while only 40 to 45 visitors have come till 2:00pm today [Wednesday] due to outbreak of coronavirus."
Custodian of Bagerhat Archaeology Department Md Golam Ferdous said, "Thousands of tourists visit the 17 archaeological sites of the Sultani era here, especially during December to March but it is decreasing fast due to outbreak of coronavirus."
