Cop among two to die
A Tangail court yesterday sentenced two people, including a police constable, to death on charge of killing the latter’s wife for dowry in 2012.
The convicts are police constable Abdul Alim alias Sumon, 32, son of Abu Hanif of Hinnaipara village in Kalihati upazila, and his friend Shamim Al Mamun, 29, of the same village.
Tangail Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge Khaleda Yasmin also fined the convicts Tk 1 lakh each, Court Inspector Tanvir Ahmed said.
According to the prosecution, constable Alim, then a member of Industrial Police, married Sumi Akter, 20, daughter of Sultan Ahmed of Sadar upazila on May 6, 2011.
During the marriage Alim demanded Tk 5 lakh as dowry from Sumi’s family, but they could only gave him Tk 3 lakh.Since then, Alim used to torture Sumi for Tk 2 lakh.
On April 20 in 2012, Alim with the help of Shamim took Sumi in Beribadh area under Dhaka’s Turag Police Station and killed her there.
Later, Sumi’s mother Sheuli Begum filed a case with Tangail Model Police Station against the two on May 5 the same year.
