Condition of nine critical
Twenty-four people were injuried, nine of them pierced by spears, as two rival groups got locked in a clash in Sirajdikhan upazila of the district yesterday.
The clash took place over establishing supremacy in the area, said local people.
All the nine hit by spears were sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in critical condition while the rest given first aid.
The seriously injured are Milon, 30, Asad Mollah, 45, Jamal Mollah, 50, Masum, 40, Khokan Sarker, 45, Akter Munshi, 28, Zakaria, 22, Akkter Mollah, 28, Mojibur Munshi, 55, and Moktar Hossain.
A number of houses were ransacked during the clash, said police.
The men of Nurul Baul and Nasir Mollah attacked each other with spears over taking control of the area. Later, the clash spread in four to five villages, said Senior Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Asaduzzaman.
On information, Sirajdikhan police went to the area and brought the situation under control. Additional policemen have been deployed in the area to avert any further trouble, said the ASP.
The rivalry between the two groups has been continuing for long. Earlier on August 20, Takbir Mollah, a supporter of Nasir Mollah group, was killed in a clash.
Two men were detained in connection with the clash. More than 500 spears were seized, said the police official.
