Child marriage bid foiled, 2 held
Two men including a bridegroom were jailed for arranging marriage of an underage girl at Madrasa village in Sadar upazila on Wednesday.
Marriage registrar Abdul Aziz, son of Abdul Hamid of the village, was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment while bridegroom Al Amin,21, son of Abul Hossain of Sarkerpara village, was jailed for six months.
Being informed that marriage of the sixteen-year-old girl, daughter of Mainuddin of Kristapur village, was arranged, a mobile court, led by Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Abdullah Al Mamun, rushed to the spot on Wednesday night and foiled the marriage and arrested the duo.
The two were later produced before the court that pronounced the verdict.
Meanwhile, the same court yesterday sentenced the director of Confidence Coaching Centre in Sadar upazila to 15 days’ imprisonment for conducting classes ignoring a circular issued by the education ministry which asked not to run coaching centres during JSC and JDC examinations.
The convict is Md Ashraf Ali, director of the coaching centre.
The court also raided another coaching centre named ‘Creative Coaching Centre’ in the area but its director and teachers managed to flee the scene, sensing the presence of the mobile court.
The UNO later sealed off the two coaching centres.
