Broccoli cultivation gaining popularity among farmers
Cultivation of broccoli, a foreign variety of vegetable, is gaining popularity among the farmers in four upazilas of Faridpur.
Farmers of different village in four upazilas -- Sadar, Boalmari, Alfadanga and Madhukhali -- are showing more interest in broccoli cultivation, because they are not only getting a good price of their produces, but the green vegetable has a growing demand as well.
Faridpur Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) Deputy Director (DD) Kartik Chandra Chakraborty said, the green vegetable not only tastes good, it has many health benefits as well.
The vegetable also help manage diabetes, prevent cancer and reduces blood pressure, he said.
Although broccoli is mostly cultivated in Boalmari, Alfadanga, Sadar and Madhukhali upazilas, his department has no data about how much area have been brought under broccoli cultivation this year, the DD said.
Farmer Nannu Mollah, 49, of Satar village in Boalmari upazila, said he has cultivated broccoli on 60 decimals of land spending Tk 20,000.
He is expecting to earn Tk 1 lakh by selling his produces this year, Nannu said.
Besides, the vegetable can be harvested within 90 days of sowing, Nannu said, adding that, at start of the season he sold each broccoli for Tk 100 to Tk 120, while he is now selling it for Tk 30 to Tk 40 per piece.
Another farmer Nazrul Mollah of the same area said people from different areas come to visit his broccoli field every day.
Although, the expenditure of broccoli farming is less than any other crops, it gives them a good profit, he said.
